United Airlines announced on Friday that it is raising baggage fees, following similar moves by American Airlines and Jet Blue earlier this week.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, United Airlines revealed that they will be increasing checked bag fees for customers traveling within North America.

This decision affects economy class passengers on domestic United Airlines flights, who will now have to pay an additional $5, bringing the cost of their first checked bag to $40.

The fee for a second checked bag will also see an increase to $45 for advance online payment and $50 at the airport.

The new policy is effective for tickets purchased on or following Saturday, Feb. 24, according to the airline.

The Chicago-based airline stated that this is the first time they have raised their bag fees in four years.

It is worth noting that United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members, and customers traveling in premium cabins will still be able to check a bag for free, United Airlines assured.

Additionally, United Airlines is updating all of its mainline aircraft with new and larger bins designed to accommodate more carry-on bags.
