United Airlines today placed an order for 110 new aircraft, divided between manufacturers Airbus and Boeing.

With Airbus, the company has placed an order for 60 additional Airbus A321neo aircraft, supporting the airline’s “United Next” initiative to integrate new aircraft into its fleet and standardize and enhance its global network. United previously ordered 50 A321XLR and 70 A321neo aircraft. With this new order, the airline’s direct purchase commitment from Airbus now amounts to 180 A321 aircraft.

The A321neo offers superior environmental performance with the lowest CO₂ emissions per seat in its class. Its significantly smaller carbon footprint will support United on its journey to reduce its CO₂ emissions.

United’s A321neo aircraft will feature Airbus’ unparalleled Airspace cabin, which includes a dedicated welcome area and the latest full-LED lighting technologies (which help reduce jet lag); new thinner side panels for extra personal space at shoulder height; improved window views with redesigned bezels and fully integrated shades; new large overhead compartments; and additional elements to improve the passenger experience.

The A321neo is the largest member of Airbus’ A320neo family, offering unrivaled range and performance. By incorporating new generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo brings a 50% noise reduction and over 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximizing the passenger comfort in the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky.

With Boeing, United Airlines exercised options to order an additional 50 Boeing 787-9 aircraft and secure an additional 50 options. The new Dreamliner order provides United additional flexibility as the airline modernizes its global fleet over the next decade.

With 150 firm orders, United has the largest Dreamliner backlog on record and is positioned to become the largest 787 operator in the world. Today’s announcement follows the airline’s record purchase of 100 787 aircraft last year.

As the first airline to operate all three models of the 787 family, United’s existing fleet consists of more than 70 Dreamliners. The 787’s fuel efficiency and reliability give United the flexibility to fly its extensive global route network.

The 787’s increased efficiency and performance reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25% compared to the planes it replaces, depending on configuration. The 787-9 has a global range that allows carriers to fly up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km) with capacity for 296 passengers.
