Partner nation sailors operated as multinational personnel during UNITAS LXIV, successfully conducting practices, maneuvers, and exercises, from the Peruvian Navy flagship BAP Pisco (AMP 156).

The exercise took place off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, as part of UNITAS, which ran from July 15 to July 21, 2023. United States Navy ships and submarines collaborated closely with ships from partner countries to carry out various maritime operations. This year, Colombia hosted UNITAS, which is the oldest annual multinational maritime exercise in the world. It involved multinational forces from 20 partner countries, including 26 warships, three submarines, 25 aircraft (planes and helicopters) and some 7,000 people. The exercise trained forces in joint maritime operations that improved tactical prowess and increased interoperability with the presence of unmanned air, surface and underwater systems.

“Working together as a multinational General Staff allows us to continue improving and learning from each other every year,” said Colombian Navy Rear Admiral Carlos Oramas, commander of the multinational General Staff. “Our teamwork during the exercise shows the remarkable achievements we achieve when we are united in pursuit of a shared mission.”

The General Staff displayed remarkable coordination and teamwork during a five-day phase. Each member was assigned specific responsibilities essential to the success of the mission. During the voyage, the staff coordinated and executed a wide range of operations and exercises among all participating vessels.

“UNITAS plays a vital role in promoting collaboration and cooperation between the United States Navy and our South American partners,” stated US Navy Captain Bryan Gallo, Deputy Commander of the Multinational General Staff. “This exercise offers a great opportunity to strengthen ties with our South American partners, improving interoperability and fostering lasting friendships that reinforce regional and maritime stability.”
