A new unitary patent system was launched on Thursday at European Union (EU) level to make it easier for companies to protect their innovations in Europe and take advantage of their intellectual property, the European Commission said. .
The unitary patent system will strengthen EU innovation and competitiveness and complement the single patent market, the Commission said in a statement.
Initially, the scheme will involve 17 member states representing around 80% of EU GDP, the EU executive said, adding that other member states may also take part in the future.
The unitary patent system, as a one-stop-shop for registering and enforcing patents in Europe, will help reduce costs, cut red tape and reduce the administrative burden on innovators, especially SMEs, we noted.

It will allow companies and other innovators to receive a patent “unitaryfor their inventions, valid in all participating Member States.
« With this system, it will no longer be necessary to navigate through a complex patchwork of national patent laws and procedures or to comply with the costly national validation requirements that apply to European patents.“, Underlines the press release.
In addition, a new Unified Patent Court (UPC), competent for unitary patents and for existing European patents, will enable companies to more effectively enforce their patent rights.
According to the Commission, the JUB will serve as a more coherent legal framework for patent litigation and will reduce the risk of contradictory decisions.
In concrete terms, a single appeal brought before the JUB will replace multiple parallel proceedings before the national courts.
