ST. LOUIS — UNI right tackle Jared Penning has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday followingnoon.
The first weekly conference honor of his career, Penning played a critical role in UNI’s offensive success both on the ground and through the air in helping the Panthers secure the program’s first-ever shutout of a top-10 FCS opponent in a 27-0 win over North Dakota last Saturday.
Penning’s blocking up front helped Amauri Pesek-Hickson, who made his first start at running back in his UNI career, run for 180 yards on 31 carries and one touchdown, the most by a Panther in eight seasons. Through the air, quarterback Theo Day was able to rack up 239 yards on 13 completions and find Sergio Morancy on a season-long 70 yard touchdown pass in the first half, as well as Brady McCullough’s first career touchdown catch on a two-yard pass.
UNI’s offense was able to rack up 402 total yards of offense with 20 first downs, marking the third game this season the Panthers have gone over 400 total yards (Idaho State, Youngstown State).
Jared is the son of Jeff and Theresa Penning, the younger brother of New Orleans Saint offensive lineman Trevor, and older brother of Stephanie. The redshirt junior from Clear Lake, Iowa, Penning is currently majoring in movement and exercise science with a minor in coaching.
Penning and the Panthers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 as UNI visits Illinois State at Hancock Stadium in Normal, Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
