Unions vs. Delhaize: The Battle for Franchise Transformation

2023-08-06 15:14:53

Since March 7, the management of Delhaize has stuck to its guns. No way for her to backtrack, or change anything in her transformation plan. For her, the 128 stores must be transferred, with their staff, to independents under franchise status.

The works councils which have been held since March 7, the conciliation meetings under the aegis of the Ministry of Employment have not made it possible to defuse the conflict. “They are in a deadlock situation where one can well ask the question of what will now stop them“, notes Myriam Delmée of Setca.

The pickets in front of the stores have been systematically fought in court by the management of Delhaize. In most cases, the court ruled in favor of Delhaize, leaving the unions bitter. “Delhaize has not changed. And if we put ourselves in the devil’s shoes, they have everything with them“, observes Rosetta Scibilia, at the CNE.”They have justice with them. They have the politicians with them, in particular the Prime Minister who does not decide. So there’s really no reason for them to change“, she continues.

In response to the unions which fear for the future of the staff and which, since the announcement of the plan, believe that the working and salary conditions of the staff of the integrated stores cannot be maintained as they are in the franchised stores, the management claims the opposite.

Since the announcement of the plan, Delhaize explained that it had been in contact with 400 candidates for the takeover of stores.
