Uninsured vehicles: Electronic block and for KTEO, what does the bill provide – 2024-05-10 02:04:47

Big brother for uninsured vehicles is just around the corner.

Establishing tiered fines for those who do not pay on time traffic fees and electronic “block” on vehicles that are not insured or have not passed a roadworthiness test foresees a bill of the Ministry of National Economy and Finance that will be put to public consultation, possibly even today Thursday (9/5).

The bill incorporating the new EU directive for the compulsory insurance (Motor Insurance Directive – MID) attempts to establish a system of immediate detection of uninsured vehicles and those that have not passed KTEO. The new provisions introduce a new digital system with stiff fines for offenders. According to the data of the services, at least 500,000 vehicles are currently circulating on the roads without insurance, while the number of vehicles that have not passed a technical inspection is unknown.

With the new system automatic cross-checks and multiple checks will be carried out every year (possibly every 3 or 4 months in the first phase, or more often every 1-2 months therefollowing) instead of once every 5 or 10 years, as has practically happened until now.

In particular, mthrough a new electronic platform AADE will be able to identify uninsured vehicles and those that have not passed KTEO and impose the corresponding fines. The platform will include data from the electronic file of AADE, the file of vehicles in circulation held by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the stolen vehicles of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, the deceased vehicles of the Ministry of the Interior, the recycled vehicles of the Alternative Vehicle Management of Greece and the insured vehicles of the Information Center of the Auxiliary Liability Insurance Fund from Automobile Accidents.

Also with the new settings:

A new penal code is established for those who do not pay the road tax on time, specifically by December 31 of each year. In particular, a graduated penalty will be imposed depending on the time of delay in payment. With the new system, the sooner following the deadline the debt is paid off, the smaller will be the independent fine that will be borne by traffic fee violators. The most basic scenario sees a fine equal to 25% of the annual road charges if the charges are paid in January, 50% if the payment is made in February and 100% of the annual road charges for paying the charges from March onwards. Today a horizontal penalty equal to the value of the annual fees is imposed regardless of the length of delay in payment even if it is one day following the due date.

Changes are also coming to fines which are imposed for cars that have not passed technical inspection by KTEO.
