In his speech, UNIDO Deputy Director General and Director General Ciyong Zou said, “We are witnessing the coming together of mobile connectivity and industrial innovation. 5G combined with AI and cloud computing brings many benefits to the transport and logistics sectors. The efficiency and quality of work have improved considerably. Site security has improved. Women’s participation in a previously male-dominated workplace has increased.”

With the benefits of AI solutions becoming more and more visible across all industries, it is important to help companies in the digitalization process. “The purpose of the alliance is to serve as a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and demonstration of best practices,” added Zou.

János Tálosi, CEO of East-West Intermodal Logistics Plc., explained: “East-West Gate Intermodal Terminal (EWG) started operations in October 2022. Each year at the terminal it is possible to load and unload 1 million TEUs. (unit equivalent of 20 feet) quickly, between broad gauge and standard gauge railways, which means high efficiency and safety requirements. As 5G enables the interconnection of all internal communications and technical equipment, the terminal’s highly automated cranes can be controlled remotely and are capable of subtle movements. This greatly improves productivity, providing a more comfortable working environment for the operating team.”

“The project marks a before and after in the development of 5G technologies in Hungary and the digitalization of rail freight and allows EWG to become an intermodal rail logistics hub in the digital age,” said Tálosi.

Radoslaw Kedzia, Vice President of Huawei’s Central-Eastern Europe and Nordic Countries, said, “East-West Gate Intermodal Terminal is a story of social value creation with excellent collaboration of different partnerships and specialized investments. The facility’s digitized and high-tech solutions attract a lot of young people to the area. The average age of the professional team is 23-25 years old. There is great security, the environment is healthy and clean for those who work and there are no adverse conditions. The solution demonstrates that 5G has truly been applied in Europe’s smart rail sector using state-of-the-art digital technologies and solves common problems, promoting digital transformation.”

The Intelligent Rail & Logistics Forum 2023 took place at the East-West Gate (EWG) intermodal terminal, located in Fényeslitke (Hungary), and covered an area of 5 million square meters – including the terminal, warehouses and development zones. It is the largest and most modern land intermodal terminal of its kind and the first private 5G rail container port in Europe.
