The poliomyelitis epidemic reappears. Vaccination campaigns once morest this disease are in sight, to eliminate it.

Steps back. Madagascar must start from zero the efforts undertaken in the fight once morest poliomyelitis. The disease is back in force. The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) is sounding the alarm, reporting two hundred cases of poliomyelitis, notified since September 2020 until today, including a 24-year-old young person. “If a person has been attacked by polio, regardless of their age, it means that this person has either not been vaccinated or has been under-vaccinated”, says Rimoyal Ratnan, communication manager at poliomyelitis, with Unicef. Regions with low vaccination coverage rates are the most affected by this disease. “Recently, a case was notified in Antananarivo Atsimondrano,” says Dr. Lalatiana Razafinimpiasa, health officer with Unicef. Poliomyelitis is manifested by fever, headaches, stomach aches, paralysis of the limbs. It is incurable, very virulent and can cause death.

Already eliminated

This disease has, however, already been eliminated. The country was declared a polio-free country in 2018. It has reappeared following the drop in vaccination coverage. Unicef has claimed a significant number of zero dose and under-vaccinated children in Madagascar. A third of children under the age of one would not be vaccinated. Parents fear the effectiveness of vaccines intended for children, which explains in particular this drop in the rate of routine vaccination of children in Madagascar, according to UNICEF. To combat this disease, the number of children vaccinated must increase. At the same time, the fight once morest open defecation must be strengthened. Vaccination campaigns are being prepared in all regions. The Urban Trail event to be held on April 30, organized by the Rotary club and supported by Unicef, will help strengthen the fight once morest this disabling disease. Four thousand young high school students will be mobilized to reinforce the messages to be transmitted to the population. For the moment, there is only the vaccine to fight once morest this disease.
