New York: 1,35,000 children under the age of two face malnutrition as Israeli forces continue to attack Gaza, UNICEF reports. UNICEF has warned that the situation of children in the city is in dire straits.

The UN agency noted that 20,000 newborns born during the war in Gaza face starvation, malnutrition and security problems.

UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said the current situation of pregnant women and newborns in the city is dire and urgent action is needed. He pointed out that the Israeli army’s offensive has completely destroyed the health system in Gaza, which has led to an increase in infant and maternal mortality rates.

Tess Ingram said the lack of proper medical care, nutrition and protection following childbirth is the cause of mothers’ deaths. A spokesman for the UN agency said pregnant, nursing mothers and babies in Gaza are sheltering in damaged homes and relying on unsanitary food and water.

UNICEF reports also show that many Palestinian children have been killed in Israeli bombings and airstrikes.

Current figures Current figures indicate that the Israeli army’s offensive in Gaza has increased the Palestinian death toll to 24,700 and injured 61,830. The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that 142 people were killed in Israeli bombings in the last 24 hours.
