UNICEF Distributes 29,000 Laptops to Ukrainian Students in Partnership with Ministry of Education and Science – Breaking Barriers to Education

Kyiv: In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, UNICEF distributed 29,000 laptops to middle and high school students in ten Ukrainian regions. Munir Mammadzadeh, UNICEF representative in Ukraine, stated that the aim of the initiative is to meet the challenges of obtaining formal education that have been disrupted by the war. Laptops were distributed to students in Propetrovska, Donetska, Zaporizka, Luhanska, Mykolayivska, Odessa, Zumska, Chernihivska, Kharkivska, Khersonska.

The initiative was made possible through support from the governments of the European Union, Japan and the Republic of Korea, UNICEF National Committees and the Breakthrough Prize Foundation’s “Tech for Refugees” initiative. Children from displaced families, people with disabilities, low-income families and other vulnerable groups will receive these devices. The laptops are being distributed as part of a wider UNICEF initiative to ensure continuous learning in Ukraine.

20,000 devices are already in use with funding from the European Union and the Republic of Korea. Another 40,000 devices will be provided in the next three months as per the priorities of the Ministry of Education and Science. The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksan Lisovy, expressed gratitude for the valuable investment in the future of Ukrainian children, saying that the initiative will become not only a way to access education, but also tools for communication and teacher support. The minister said UNICEF will continue to support the Ukrainian government’s mission to provide education to all students.
