Unhealthy Traits in Middle-Aged Adults: The Link to Premature Heart Attacks and Early Death

A recent medical study warned that middle-aged adults who have three or more “unhealthy traits”, including diabetes and cholesterol, are more likely to have a heart attack two years earlier than those who do not have any of them, and therefore they are more likely to die prematurely.

The researchers said that although middle-aged adults may feel generally healthy, they are more likely to suffer from some underlying problems such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels or high cholesterol.

They warned that there is an increasing number of people suffering from “metabolic syndrome”, who unintentionally postpone or ignore their poor health features for later stages of life, which exacerbates them and increases their problems.

A study suggests that middle-aged adults who have three or more “unhealthy traits” are more likely to have a heart attack two years earlier than those who don’t have any.

During the examination, information was collected on weight, height, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood glucose (sugar), and the researchers also completed a survey regarding their lifestyle habits. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in people who had three or more of the following: large waist circumference, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or high blood sugar levels.

Among the group, 5,000 people were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and their information was compared with 10,000 people without metabolic syndrome.

The researchers considered that the presence of this syndrome, neglect of medical and nutritional advice, especially the practice of permanent moderate activity, and the application of a healthy diet allow for a high risk of early death in the event of these features, especially if they are combined.
