A historical fact that stands out for the season. Analysis.

A summer to forget

The impression left by the summer that is coming to an end is likely to be negative. First of all, the heat was not there. In fact, no heat wave was recorded during the three months of the weather season from June to August and there are few days with a maximum of 30°C or better. However, it is above all the precipitation that attracts attention. By combining the two elements, we get a season that leaves something to be desired. “We had established that the El Niño phenomenon would be an element of the unfavorable weather this summer,” said Réjean Ouimet, meteorologist. It was. The summer was the 31st worst observed in Montreal since the 1940s. The previous El Niño summer in 2015 was the 25th worst ever. A very influential element for the summer season.

Rainy August

Throughout Quebec, the month of August was marked by an abundance of precipitation. Gaspé broke a record with 302.2 mm of rain, surpassing the old mark of 1990 by nearly 100 mm. In Abitibi, Val-d’Or experienced a very rainy month with total water received 170% above normal.

August cooler

Considering the average temperatures during the month of August, we obtain a slight deviation from normal. However, this difference becomes more apparent when it comes to the maximums. Indeed, if the heat was not there during the day, the nights were relatively mild. This is partly explained by the fact that the clouds were very present. Overcast skies help keep heat in the atmosphere at night and limit solar surface heating during the day.

“August was cool in Quebec,” explains Réjean Ouimet. There are no days above 30 degrees. The trough positioned west of Quebec at the start of the summer slid over the province in the second half of the season, which put a brake on the heat. »

A wet summer

Only one region experienced a drier than normal summer: northwestern Quebec. Abitibi suffered from the situation due to a very active season with regard to forest fires. All other areas received higher than usual precipitation totals. In addition, Sherbrooke (600 mm), Quebec (534 mm) and Gaspé (541 mm) broke rain records that were over 40 years old. “Summer is the worst in terms of rain,” says Réjean Ouimet. In Montreal, the amount of water received during the season is the greatest since the summer of 1972. And it is the third highest summer total in the last 80 years. Disturbing fact: since 2010, five summers have been among the ten wettest since the beginning of the data. A recurrence to watch in the future.
