The case of Alexina Wattiez: Euthanasia and death

Alexina Wattiez, a 36-year-old woman, decided to undergo euthanasia in March 2022 following her health seriously deteriorated due to terminal cancer.

Euthanasia in Belgium involves a home visit by a doctor and two nurses to supervise the procedure, giving patients the option to end their suffering in a legal and controlled manner.

A euthanasia gone wrong

Although everything was meticulously planned, the euthanasia procedure did not go as expected. When the lethal drugs failed to have the desired effect, the doctor in charge apparently made the decision to use a pillow to suffocate the patient. At the time, Alexina’s partner and daughter were not present in the room, having chosen to leave when the lethal medications were administered.

The patient’s family, upon learning what happened, was shocked. They described the situation as “strange” and “disorderly,” with a high degree of improvisation and confusion. Additionally, they reported hearing screams coming from the room.
