Unfair Accusations and Online Harassment: The Impact on Innocent Lives

If Zaccaria should soon appear before the criminal court of Liège for harassment following having posted on his Instagram profile the photo of Maxime, a policeman from the Basse-Meuse area, explaining that he was the “killer of Domenico” (our edition of August 22), this police inspector now fears for his life.

For a week, the 25-year-old policeman has been unfairly accused and thrown on social networks when he has nothing to do with this case. The young dad thus had to put his family in safety, according to his lawyer, the Huois penalist Me Alexandre Wilmotte. “In a few seconds, his life completely changed,” he told RTL Info.

Still, if Zaccaria was arrested, many other people shared the calls for hatred on social networks. “Legal proceedings will be initiated once morest all those who have contributed to this manhunt,” Mr. Wilmotte told Sud Info. Social networks might also be blamed. “The Digital Services Act has just come into force in Europe and it reinforces the responsibility of social networks”, he concluded.
