“Unexplained Tremors on Denmark’s Bornholm Island: Acoustic Pressure Waves from Unknown Source”

A series of minor earthquakes recorded on Saturday on the Danish Baltic island of Bornholm baffled scientists, who now say they were caused by “acoustic pressure waves from an unknown source”.

At first it was believed that earthquakes caused earthquakes. Then, seismologists hypothesized that it originated from controlled explosions in Poland, more than 140 kilometers to the south.

On Monday, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, an official body that monitors the underground, said the tremors “were not caused by earthquakes, but by pressure waves from an event in the atmosphere” but came from an “unknown source”.

“Seismological experts can say that it is unlikely that the tremors were triggered by a controlled explosion in Poland, which was carried out shortly before the first reports of earthquakes on Bornholm,” the agency, known as GEOS, added in a statement.

On Saturday, Geos said it had received more than 60 reports from citizens on Bornholm that “earthquake-like tremors,” described as deep rumbles, tremors and variable pressure in the ear, were reported in the followingnoon in Bornholm.

No one was harmed from the phenomenon. Police said members of the public also contacted them to report the tremor in the eastern part of the island. Danish media reported that the earthquake caused a crack in the wall of a house.

Geos said that the seismic tremors were measured at 2.3 on the Richter scale.

Polish authorities said that there was intense activity during the “Anaconda 23” maneuvers in Ustka, northern Poland, in which jet fighters participated and included the firing of live artillery ammunition.

GEOS, an independent research and advisory firm within the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, said it has two seismometers on Bornholm that collect data around the clock.

It is noteworthy that Bornholm, which is inhabited by nearly 40,000 people, is a rocky island in the Baltic Sea located south of Sweden, northeastern Germany and northern Poland.
