“Unexpected Encounter: Sonia Mabrouk and Pascal Obispo – Healing Through the Arts”

2023-05-24 19:51:50

An unexpected encounter. On the music side, he is for the harmony of chords. On the debate side, she was never afraid of disagreements. Sonia Mabrouk is a warrior leading sharp political interviews. Pascal Obispo has everything romantic that cultivates the sweetness of melodies. In common, they have that sort of armor that makes them hard to pin down, and a love of the words they play with.

Every morning, at 8:13 a.m. exactly, Sonia Mabrouk seeks her own, precise, to confront the political guest of the morning of Europe 1. She shows herself determined, pushes him elegantly, whatever his side, in his contradictions, to hit the bull’s eye often.

Touted as a freedom fighter by “Le Figaro”, decried as the director of “reaction” by “Liberation”, she claims a share of nostalgia that makes her pass as a conservative. But Sonia Mabrouk sticks to her positions.

Journalist-writer touched by the sacred at the death of her mother

Recently, a sentence from her latest book in which the former student of the Jeanne-d’Arc school in Tunis praises the beauty of the Latin mass sparked an outcry in prime time. A profession of faith assumed. Not only driven by the desire to do battle with the decay of the Western world that she denounces, but above all triggered by the sudden death of her mother, five months ago, which made her, she claims. , “sensitive to the question of the immortality of the soul”.

At the turn of a chapter, Sonia Mabrouk evokes it, with modesty: “Wrapped in an immaculate white sheet, a slight smile on her lips, the protruding cheekbones, the proud forehead, freckles delicately scattered around her nose so delicate, my mother radiated the sacred. Raising her contemporaries beyond themselves, she therefore made a fight of it.

Like this followingnoon of May 19, where she signed at Alice, the Cap-Ferret bookstore, the book in question, “Reconquering the sacred”, published by the Observatory editions. Under the eyes of dozens of bourgeois on vacation, it evokes the mystical shadows of the writer-philosopher Georges Bataille, the poetry of the “beyond” of Michel Leiris, refractory to the rationality of a modern world which, from following her too, will end up disenchanting us. No offense to his detractors, his books, once morest the tide of imposed well-thinking, are a certain success. To those close to her, Sonia Mabrouk confides that she never feels so fully herself as when she blackens the pages. His buried soul tracks down eternity in writing, seeks grandeur, light…

Passion painting for a tormented singer

Is Pascal Obispo part of a similar brushstroke quest? The series of 68 paintings that he has been exhibiting since March 26 at the Mer Marine museum in Bordeaux bears the evocative title of “Art Therapy”. When the music was no longer enough, the shapes and colors took over from the notes to get through the trials… What we call life.

Full of shapes, curves, and eyes, “a form of constant presence” for the artist, the acrylic and felt works, some of more than 6 meters, created in his studio in Cap-Ferret, have something to do with his songs. They tell stories: a love letter, a cry, a suffering. Because torments, Pascal Obispo has known. The loneliness of an only son of divorced parents, fame experienced as voyeurism, and other scars that he strives to camouflage behind tinted glasses.

On April 12 in the Salle Gaveau, during a conference given with the philosopher – also disparaged – Michel Onfray, as part of the “Rencontres du Figaro”, Sonia Mabrouk claimed to have written her essay on the sacred, with “the ink of the heart and point of the soul”.

In the front row during this evening, behind his dark glasses, the singer listened “religiously” according to witnesses, the two authors conversing on “what opens up to greater than oneself”. A fervent admirer, it seems, of Onfray’s freedom of thought, the artist claims the same fierce independence that has earned him some setbacks with the music industry. But he does not care, he traces his furrow.

Two years ago, this hitmaker launched his own application, Obispo All Access. Animations, clips, series, programs, books, unpublished sharing around a piano and a guitar, karaoke, documentaries, interviews… continuously and above all in complete freedom. Like him, musical styles vary: from classical to jazz, from flamenco to French song. This English rock madman never really strayed from the French shores.

The same inner quest carries these two wounded souls

Just before celebrating with a tour thirty years of success, he will once once more moor there at the start of the next school year with a new album entitled “Le beau qui pleut”. The few people authorized to listen to it speak of “an ode to the sublime”, of “an assumed transcendence”. In addition to their days, for a few weeks it is said, the singer-songwriter and the journalist-writer share the taste of overcoming by the spirit. An inner quest transports two wounded souls.

Obispo and Mabrouk heal together from the wars and bereavements of life. Her and him at the tip of Cap-Ferret, an Ascension weekend. The secret of the divine idyll will have lasted only a time. An unexpected couple… For those who let themselves be trapped by the noise of evidence.
