  • Bogotá was selected in 2018 as a pilot city for the formulation of the Thematic Indicators for Culture in the 2030 Agenda.
  • This May 30 and 31, the international workshop was held with the participating countries.
  • This exercise has promoted the formulation of public policies to strengthen the sector.
  • Among the outstanding results is the creation and implementation of the Bogotá Satellite Account for Culture and Creative Economy, the only one in the world at the city level.

On May 30 and 31, an international workshop was held on the results of the implementation of the pilot exercise of the Thematic Indicators for Culture in the 2030 Agenda, led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

During this socialization, Catalina Valencia, secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sport He highlighted that thanks to this exercise with international support, it has been possible to identify various challenges to work on, and it has been possible to develop strategies that benefit Bogotá.

“Today I want to emphasize the pride I feel for Bogotá. In this closing of the month of May, from the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Sport we met with the referents of other countries and with UNESCO, to socialize our experience as an international pioneer city in cultural development. This has allowed us to enhance the added value of culture, which by 2021 was over $13.9 trillion, a figure that represents 5.2% of the total added value of the city, exceeding sectors such as construction ($8 ,4 millions)”added the Secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sports, Catalina Valencia

A clear example of this is the formulation and strengthening of public policies, designed with the aim of encouraging the supply of cultural goods and services.

Likewise, it has been possible to promote the use of technologies and digital media for cultural purposes, and standardize information systems and administrative records, in order to facilitate access to data to optimize decision-making in the face of important challenges that require great precision.

Additionally, the creation of inter-institutional work groups for the achievement, analysis and interpretation of data is highlighted, which has allowed networking between local and national entities. This interaction has facilitated the generation of solid relationships for the management of knowledge related to culture, arts and heritage.

Thus, being chosen as a pilot city by UNESCO has made it possible to develop and make visible the work of the country’s cultural and creative sector. Bogotá concentrates a large part of this sector at the national level, being a benchmark in economic, regulatory, infrastructure and cultural terms.

In this order of ideas, and thanks to teamwork, Bogotá is proud to be the first city in the world to have a Satellite Account for Culture and Creative Economy at the city level.

Bogotá, being internationally recognized as a cultural city, has been developing various actions and strategies to promote the cultural and creative sector of the capital. For this reason, in 2018 it was selected along with approximately 13 cities, as a model for the measurement of indicators that point to the aforementioned 2030 Agenda.

This is how the transversal role of culture has been evidenced in all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)which have promoted the formulation of public policies, plans and programs aimed at strengthening this sector as a development engine.

Colombia, through the implementation of this pilot, has managed to strengthen cultural statistics at the local level, contributing to the fulfillment of one of the strategic objectives of the Public Policy of Cultural and Creative Economy: Knowledge management; promoting the inter-institutional articulation of the sector for the efficient use of statistics and, in this way, generate an impact in the various economic and social sectors of Bogotá.
