Unemployment rises by 10 percent – SPÖ social spokesman Muchitsch: “Government on a ghost ride in terms of economic policy”

Vienna (OTS/SK) – “Unemployment has been rising steadily and unchecked by the turquoise-green government since March 2023,” says SPÖ social spokesman Josef Muchitsch. At the end of March 2024, 370,000 people were unemployed or in training, which is 36,000 more than a year ago. AMS boss Johannes Kopf speaks of a “particularly bad development” and says that domestic companies have “lost competitiveness due to high inflation”. Muchitsch: “Everyone is now paying double or triple the price for the government’s inaction once morest record inflation in the form of record prices, recession and unemployment.” ****

Unemployment rose in production and construction by more than 20 percent compared to March of the previous year. Youth unemployment rose by 17.8 percent to almost 30,000. The number of apprenticeship seekers increased by almost 30 percent to 6,774.

Muchitsch: “The list of problem areas is getting longer and longer. I cannot understand and cannot accept that the government still does not perceive this as an alarm signal, but rather, like ÖVP Labor Minister Kocher, is still trying to whitewash the dramatic development.”

“The government has distributed billions to companies without a plan or aim, most recently through the Energy Cost Subsidy II. Because it was paid out unconditionally, this did not lower any prices, did not promote investment and employment, but only additionally subsidized company profits,” said Muchitsch. “In terms of economic and labor market policy, this government is on the wrong track. You’re not just on the wrong track, you’re heading in the wrong direction.” (End) wf/pok
