Employment in Luxembourg: More than 18,000 job seekers, unheard of since April 2021

LUXEMBOURG – The number of unemployed increased by almost 2,500 people between December 2022 and December 2023.

The number of available resident job seekers registered with ADEM stood at 18,198 as of December 31, 2023, an increase of 2,438 people compared to December 2022 (+15.5%), the agency indicated. for employment in a press release Monday. The bar of 18,000 unemployed has not been crossed since April 2021. The unemployment rate stands at 5.5%.

While all categories are affected, the largest increases concern job seekers with higher education qualifications (+24.1%) as well as young people under 30 (+20.8%).

Decrease in the number of available positions

Job seekers are most numerous in the secretarial and assistance sectors (1,971), cleaning (1,771) and in structural and secondary work (1,433).

For their part, during the month of December 2023, employers declared 2,226 vacant positions to ADEM, which corresponds to a drop of 16.9% compared to December 2022. In total, the number of available positions at the end of the month stood at 6,997, a decrease of 36% compared to December 2022.
