Claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the United States fell last week to its lowest level in two monthssuggesting resilient demand for workers amid a moderation in job creation.
Initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits fell by 9,000 to 228,000 in the week ending July 15, according to Labor Department data released Thursday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists pointed to 240,000 new requests.
Continuing claims, which count those who have received unemployment benefits for more than a week, increased by 33,000 to 1.75 million in the week to July 8. This digit marks the largest increase in more than three months.
The four-week moving average of initial claims eased to a six-week low of 237,500. This can help minimize volatility in numbers from week to week.
