Willy Borsus was the guest of the Bel RTL morning this Monday. At the microphone of Martin Buxant, he spoke regarding unemployment in Wallonia. He believes that job seekers must be supported, but he also calls for sanctions for people who “refuse suitable employment“.
Economy Minister Willy Borsus (MR) says there are 223,000 unemployed job seekers in Wallonia. A number considered important even though there is “a number of vacant shortage occupations“, even in “more immediately accessible functions“. He adds: “A particularly challenging element is long-term unemployment. Among these job seekers, there are around 93,000 who have been there for two years and 38,000 for five years..”
What should be done then? “Should some job seekers be forced to accept jobs?“, challenges the journalist. “First you have to accompany, but at a certain point, you have to punish“, replies Willy Borsus. He explains: “I suggest that as soon as you refuse a suitable job, or you don’t show up for a job interview or you show up in a completely artificial way, manifestly not wanting to be hired , indeed, we will be sanctioned.“He affirms that there is”a whole series of possibilities, but at the end of the day, if they are not taken, the sanction must be effective“.
What penalties? “Periods of suspension of the benefit of unemployment benefits“, considers the Liberal minister.
