Unearthing World War I Shells in Westhoek: A Cautionary Tale

2023-11-19 08:40:44

Residents of the Westhoek had a funny surprise. Following the bad weather in recent days, people discovered that shells from the First World War had been brought to the surface, reports The last news. A phenomenon which can be explained by the fact that the earth is less firm due to the abundant rains which fell in West Flanders.

Residents are advised to notify the police and not to approach these munitions because even more than 100 years after the war, they remain dangerous. “Even more than 100 years after the war, it is better to move away from it. We are responsible for the findings and pass the information on to SEDEE, the Explosive Ordnance Collection and Disposal Service,” explains Glenn Verdru, spokesperson for the Arro Ypres police zone.
