A mysterious creature, which appeared on a beach in Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean, is causing many questions among the population, but also in the scientific community.

The images of the marine animal found headless are strangely reminiscent of a mermaid. The photos were shared on a Facebook page of residents of the region.

Several people have suggested that it might be some kind of whale, dolphin, or sea cow.

However, no one is able to confirm anything from the photographs, and no DNA testing has been carried out.

The carcass was buried before any investigation.

The remains were discovered by locals on Simberi, a small volcanic island where around 1,000 people live.

The island is located in the Bismarck Sea, and in the province of New Ireland.

The animal, believed to be a “globster,” an unidentified organic mass, had lost most of its head and very large pieces of flesh.

According to one researcher, it “looks like a long-dead dugong,” Erich Hoyt, a researcher at the British charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation, told MailOnline in an interview.

“He would have been dead for weeks or even longer,” he added.

These creatures are known to turn white when their skin falls off.

If a cetacean, the most common species near Papua New Guinea are spinner dolphins, sperm whales, short-finned pilot whales and pantropical spotted dolphins.
