It’s important to monitor your bowel movements because they can reveal a lot regarding your overall health.

Your stools can indicate that your body is fighting a bug like norovirus, or that you have an underlying medical condition.

Also, the stool, which looks somewhat like soft ice cream, is often thin and soft and has rough edges, unlike the more solid ones. You may not always be able to control when it is excreted, according to the British newspaper “The Sun”.

This type of stool may indicate that the person is suffering from a mild case of diarrhea, and this usually goes away on its own.

Runny stools can also be a sign that you need to add more fiber to your diet.

Fiber helps maintain a healthy digestive system and prevent constipation, increasing the volume of stool and making it softer and easier to pass through the intestines.

So an adult should eat regarding 30 grams per day as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

High-fiber foods include whole-grain bread, pasta or rice, fruits, vegetables, peas, beans, nuts, seeds and potatoes with skin.

What are the risks of chronic diarrhea?

If your stool looks like ice cream, you may be at risk for some complications, including kidney disease and malnutrition.

When you suffer from chronic diarrhea, your body loses a lot of water and electrolytes.

Loss of electrolytes can have serious consequences, such as kidney disease, which occurs when the kidneys don’t work properly.

Diarrhea also leads to malnutrition, because it prevents the body from absorbing nutrients from food, and this may be a problem in the long term, because it affects the heart, lungs, brain, and nervous system.

What are the causes of chronic diarrhea?

Diarrhea is usually short-lived, lasting no more than a few days, but when it continues for weeks, it usually means there is another problem.

Loose stools can be a symptom of a medical condition such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or celiac disease.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disease that affects the digestive system, causing symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.

Celiac disease is a condition in which your immune system attacks tissues when you eat gluten, damaging your intestines, so your body cannot absorb nutrients properly.

Symptoms include foul-smelling diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating following eating gluten, in addition to general fatigue, weight loss, itchy rashes, and problems with balance or speech due to the effect on the brain.

Following a gluten-free diet should help control symptoms and prevent long-term complications of the condition, according to the NHS.

In rare cases, runny stool is a sign of carcinoid syndrome, which occurs when a rare cancerous tumor called a carcinoma releases certain chemicals into the bloodstream and the cancer attacks the cells that secrete hormones into the bloodstream (neuroendocrine cells).

These tumors occur anywhere in the body but often develop in the digestive system, which may lead to diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal pain.

Although carcinoid syndrome itself is not fatal, the cancer that causes it is, and the survival rate for this disease is between 65% and 90%, depending on the stage and location of the tumor.

Other types of stool:

Stool that resembles a sausage, is soft and easy to pass, indicates that everything is going smoothly in your digestion and that you are eating the right amount of fiber.

Snake-shaped stools are softer than sausage-shaped stools and are easier to pass, which is also normal.
