Understanding Your Payslip: New Changes and Simplifications to Help Navigate Salary Increases and Financial Hardship

Salaries: since the beginning of 2022, prices have increased a lot, which makes bills, subscriptions, insurance, and groceries more expensive.

This can cause financial hardship at the start of the month for some workers. To help them, payslips will change from July 1, 2023. Everything is explained below.

Understanding your payslip: the “net social amount”

Each month, your employer pays you money in exchange for your work. To avoid errors and assert your rights, it is important to check your payslip regularly. However, it is not always easy to understand, as it contains information on contributions, taxes, premiums, etc.

In order to facilitate the understanding of payslips, a new version will be put in place from July 1, 2023. This measure was imposed by an order published last February. Among the changes will be the “net social amount“. This figure corresponds to your salary, minus the compulsory social contributions.

It is important for people who declare their income to the CAF to obtain aid such as the RSA or the activity bonus. This information will be easily accessible on your payslip, without any calculation to be made, which should limit reporting errors and facilitate access to social rights.

Simplification of payslips

Previously, recipients had to calculate the net social amount themselves, taking into account premiums and deducting social contributions, which might cause misunderstandings with the CAF or the MSA. From 2024, employers will have to declare the net social amount for each of their employees to social organisations, as they already do for the net taxable amount declared to the tax authorities.

But that’s not all. Payslips will be simplified to be clearer and easier to understand for employees and employers. The benefits and deductions applied to wages will be indicated more clearly.

On the other hand, some data that has no impact on employee income may be deleted to reduce the complexity of the document. Hopefully these changes will make it easier for French people to understand their pay and contributions.
