Understanding Wrist Fractures and Treatment Options for a Speedy Recovery

[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] There are many people who enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, or camping during the summer and visit the hospital following their vacation. When a fall accident occurs, such as a sudden slip or trip, many people unconsciously reach out and land on the ground, resulting in injuries. A common example is a fall fracture, such as a wrist fracture.

Wrist fractures are characterized by severe swelling and pain. In severe cases, you can visually see that your arm is deformed. However, in general cases, it is difficult for the average person to clearly distinguish between the symptoms of a sprain and a fracture. If you experience excessive pain or severe swelling in your wrist following a fall, you may suspect a fracture.

If a wrist fracture is suspected, X-rays and CT scans are used to check the degree of bone misalignment and the size of the broken bone fragment within the normal range. For relatively minor fractures, the misaligned bone is pulled back into place and fixed with a splint such as a cast.

Director Kwon Yong-shin of Olvaro Hospital said, “There are cases where surgery is necessary. This occurs when the degree of fracture is so severe that it is difficult to fix the bone non-surgically, or when a fracture occurs involving the joint surface where the bones come into contact with each other. There are two ways to surgically treat wrist fractures. “Open reduction surgery involves cutting the skin to reveal the fractured area and aligning the bone, and metal plate fixation surgery involves fixing the bone with a titanium metal plate and screws,” he said.

He continued, “Due to the nature of wrist fracture surgery, general or partial anesthesia is required, and even following surgery, a half cast is required for several weeks depending on the progress. “If rehabilitation is done well, daily life is possible within 2 to 3 months following surgery,” he added.

Injuries to the hand, where many relatively small bones are attached and perform sophisticated functions, are considered a difficult treatment area in orthopedics. Therefore, you must check the experience and skill level of the medical staff before making your choice.
