There are many causes explaining the appearance of white spots on the nail. It may be a harmless scratch caused by repeated manicures. However, this is not a sign to be overlooked: in some cases, a more serious disease is the cause, in the liver or kidneys.
Symptoms of leukonychia (“Leukonychia: What Can White Nails Tell Us?” published by the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology in 2022) are above all the appearance of opaque white spots on the nails. They can appear on the fingernails or toenails. These white spots can take different forms: dots, lines or a totally opaque white nail. In some cases, the white patch moves as the nail grows. In other cases, it does not move despite the growth of the nail.
This difference is explained by the type of leukonychia (” Leukonychia and Other Nail Discoloration: An Overview published in the journal Syndromes: Rapid Recognition and Perioperative Implications in 2019). Indeed, it may be a real leukonychia: in this case, the white spots originate in the matrix of the nail. On the other hand, in case of apparent leukonychia, the white spots are not in the nail, but at the level of the nail bed, the part of the nail which is under the nail.
