Understanding Weather Patterns: Anticyclonic and Depressions in Europe Explained

It is the general atmospheric situation, the culprit. In fact, our weather is determined by depressions that pass from the North Atlantic towards Scandinavia and the disturbances associated with them follow one another in particular over our country. This type of situation is a bit atypical and is usually observed towards the end of September or in October, these are in fact fall conditions. As for southern Europe, it is experiencing anticyclonic conditions and much higher temperatures.

If these terms are not clear to you, here is a “simplistic” summary: the high pressures (our famous anticyclone) are relatively stable. There is a lot of air above us, the clouds are struggling to develop and the weather is generally pleasant… or at least stable. This is what is happening for the moment on the side of the Mediterranean basin. Conversely, a depression (low pressure zone) is more disturbed. The idea is as follows: highs and lows play a game of gears (respectively, for the northern hemisphere, clockwise and anti-clockwise).

For the moment, the anticyclone present on the side of southern Europe is so strong that it freezes the whole situation: it is hot and dry in the south, while the gears cause the depressions to scroll to the north. This is very visible on the animation proposed below.
