Cairo – Masrawy:
Dr. Jamal Shaaban, dean of the National Heart Institute, has published a number of tips and information on vitamin D.
Shaaban said on his Facebook account today, Wednesday, that “Vitamin D is closer to the hormone because it is synthesized in the skin from cholesterol with the stimulation of sunlight, and if exposure to the sun is provided for sufficient periods, not only the face and hands, but a larger area of the skin (the sun is beneficial and harmful”). With the food containing eggs, dairy and fish, there would be no need to take vitamin preparations.
He pointed out that the appropriate rate is not less than 30 nanograms per milliliter, and recently some studies aim to reach a rate of 50 nanograms per milliliter.
He stressed the need to conduct an analysis in a reliable laboratory because the error rates in its measurement are very high.
For people most at risk of vitamin D deficiency:
* children
* the elderly
* Those who suffer from stomach or kidney problems that affect the level of vitamin D
Shaaban touched on the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, which include:
* Pain and fragility in the bones and joints
Chest pains and heart palpitations
* Exhaustion
* HIV
He explained that the benefits include:
* Bone health
* Treatment of rickets in children
Adult osteoporosis
Unproven benefits include: prevention of cancer, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, Alzheimer’s, fatigue and immune deficiency.
But he warned that an increase in vitamin D levels might lead to serious consequences, such as calcium deposition in the heart and vessels.
