“Understanding Type 1 Diabetes: Symptoms, Complications, and Prevention”

2023-04-19 05:20:52

Type 1 diabetes affects about one million Americans, and it is a chronic autoimmune disease that begins suddenly and is not manifested in obesity (like type 2, which is more hereditary) and requires subcutaneous insulin injections. This disease can be associated with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid problems.

The patient suffers, over time, with less severe symptoms (latent autoimmunity). Complications such as cellulitis, urinary tract infection, occlusive and occipital neuropathy, diastolic dysfunction, macular problems, and nephropathy are all common.

In this context, patients who have a family history of this disease must undergo a preventive examination called anti islet antibodies for early detection of the disease. It is also important to have a urinalysis test and check for microalbuminuria once a year. It should be noted that gastroparesis is also common, as well as Charcot joint (bone deformities). Doctors advise taking pneumococcal vaccines and not sitting for more than 90 minutes. As for treatment with monoclonal antibodies, it could be promising in the future.
