For him, the scenario of a military intervention by the countries of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), whose ultimatum to the putschists expired last night, “remain credible” car “the Chiefs of Staff met for two days and prepared plans for engagement”underlines the former head of the French military mission to the UN.

“It’s a matter to be settled between Nigeriens”

The only supporters of the putschists “are Mali and Burkina Faso who have already made coups on their side. The junta is totally isolated”points out Dominique Trinquand. “It cannot hold up, if only economically: currently, electricity has been cut off by Nigeria, which supplies 70% of electricity to Niger. In addition, all aid has been cut off, but Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, totally on a drip”.

Dominique Trinquand highlights the “dissensions” who cross the military junta, following “a coup d’etat for reasons and personal convenience of General Tiani”. “It’s a delicate situation for France because we put it in the front line, he admits, but it’s a matter to be settled between Nigeriens, and between Africans”.
