Chonbuk National University doctoral student Naeunji (Veterinary Department Epidemiology Laboratory, Advisor Professor Jaegu Eom) won the ‘Best Oral Presentation Award’ at the International Conference of the World Society of Virology recently held in Latvia.
At this international symposium, Ph.D. student Eunji Na established an animal model for Akabane virus, which is transmitted through back mosquitoes, and presented research results related to the pathogenic mechanism of the virus using reverse genetic technology, receiving favorable reviews.
As the mosquito’s habitat expands due to global warming, there is a possibility that the epidemic period and area of the virus will expand, so research on borne diseases caused by Akabane virus is needed.
However, existing research on Akabane virus in Korea has not established an animal model, so there were many difficulties in research on the mechanism that causes pathogenicity, such as the induction of non-suppurative encephalitis in voice actors (adult-grown cows).
Through this study, Ph.D. student Eunji Na established an animal model for Akabane virus, which causes miscarriage, stillbirth and encephalitis in domestic voice actors, using a mouse model, and studied related disease-causing factors and pathways.
“This study is expected to find factors that cause pathogenicity in voice actors, and to help develop vaccines for Akabane virus and research on treatments through established animal models,” said Naeun-ji Na, a doctoral student.
