[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] Studies have shown that nitric oxide is associated with the occurrence of migraines.
The results of a study on how nitric oxide and nitric oxide affect the development of migraines have been published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Migraine is a type of headache that gets worse over time. Studies have shown that migraine headaches are aggravated by exposure to nitric oxide, a substance that causes blood vessels to dilate. This is known to be because nitric oxide sensitizes the sense of pain.
Peroxynitrite can be broken down in the body into nitric oxide, which can cause migraine headaches by a similar mechanism. Carbon monoxide and nitrite peroxide are substances that are normally present in the body, but the mechanisms by which they are specifically involved in aggravating migraine are not known.
The research team tried to elucidate the mechanism by which nitric oxide and nitrite peroxide exacerbate migraine headaches through mouse experiments. They first stressed the mice for three days or caused migraine headaches by inflaming their brains.
After the initial pain response subsided, the researchers injected the mice with small doses of nitric oxide and observed how the neural activity changed, which was associated with worsening migraine headaches. Afterwards, the research team injected a substance that removes nitrite peroxide to investigate whether the mice’s pain was reduced.
As a result of the study, when nitrite peroxide was removed, the pain sensitivity caused by nitric oxide was reduced, but the increased sensitivity by inflammatory substances was not reduced. However, at this time, the overall amount of nitrite peroxide in the nervous tissue decreased, and as a result, the activity of nociceptive nerves was suppressed.
The research team explained that these results can be interpreted as that nitrous oxide and nitric oxide, which are produced when nitrite peroxide is decomposed, cause migraines, and that nitrous peroxide can be a target for migraine treatment. They concluded that nitric oxide was involved in migraine development.
