The liver is the largest organ in our body and is located in the upper right abdomen. The liver plays numerous roles in the body. Its representative role is to process ingested nutrients and send them into the bloodstream or store them. In addition, it plays a role in breaking down and removing alcohol, drugs, and toxic substances from the body.

Recent studies have shown that the liver is closely related to the brain. Scientists call this the ‘Liver-brain axis’. The liver-brain axis is particularly closely related to cognitive function, and it is known that inflammation occurring in the liver reduces cognitive function.

According to the results of an experiment using mice, a high rate of liver dysfunction and inflammation in the liver was found in mice with a genetically high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

According to a study published in July 2023, when the liver becomes fibrotic due to inflammation, brain volume decreases, especially in the hippocampus, thalamus, striatum, brainstem, and cerebellum. The substance mediating this liver-brain axis has been found to be C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute inflammatory substance produced in the liver.

The researchers said these results suggest that CRP levels should be monitored in patients with liver disease to prevent deterioration in cognitive function.
