We are integral and systemic beings. Which implies that everything has to do with everything. Our body systems are closely related, they are interdependent. The same thing happens with the mind and with the mind-body relationship. Nothing works alone and the impacts on a small part of the system reach the whole.
This is how our system works inside and out. The environment influences each system. Between the environment and the genetic load, our phenotype is transformed. We have already mentioned it in previous articles, our real or imaginary experiences transform our own DNA.
Each person has their own coping style – the ability to deploy cognitive, emotional, and behavioral strategies to resolve internal or external demands. Sometimes this coping capacity is overwhelmed and we may believe that we cannot go through the process with a successful resolution. We might even believe that we do not have the capacity, motivation or sufficient tools. Who hasn’t felt at some point that they can’t handle this or that? It’s part of life. It is interesting to keep in mind that we are beings with great capacities, that we can go through states of fragility. Considering states of instability instead of weakening ourselves, puts us in a place of greater possibilities.
To achieve well-being, which is ultimately quality of life, there is a key that makes the difference: learning. Why is it important to learn? They say that human beings are the only ones who stumble over the same stone. Although it is a popular saying and who knows where it comes from, each of us realizes it in our own lives. What happens to us? We simply didn’t learn and so we repeated it over and over once more.
If we learn, we can choose not to repeat. What can we do to learn? The first thing is to become part of it, get involved in the situation and observe. Look inside ourselves even more than outside. Understanding ourselves: what we think, feel and how we act. Understand what motivates that behavior, that cognition and that emotion.
Being protagonists requires an internal locus of control – attributing to oneself the ability to resolve and go for what is valuable to us. It is a strategy to get out of the passive victim, which brings stress to the system. The victim has an external locus of control, it is the environment that makes him or her. It is simply minimized and places the power outside. From psychology we know that it is self-awareness that allows us to take charge. By taking charge we can choose and change whatever.
It is necessary to define what is important to us and what we want to positively and specifically achieve. Let’s say what, how and when. Whether it is a change, a state, a thing, a relationship…, whatever.
It is observing each situation from a compassionate perspective with oneself and others. It is worth taking a parenthesis to remember that we judge others by what they do and ourselves by intentions. Which, a priori, seems to leave us in a good position, but in reality it gives us greater vulnerability. The only thing the destructive critical stance brings is suffering. And it is the one who criticizes who is most affected. The entire system is altered and stressed: physically, emotionally and cognitively.
When the system is stressed, disorders, dysfunctions and diseases appear in the body-mind, in relationships. These processes are further altered by the bad habits that tend to accompany them and the combo is complete. We have a time bomb that can explode here and now or in the future, near or far. The environment will also be affected and those closest to you will be the most intoxicated.
How does learning transform this process and empower it? When we apply reflection and gradually increase our own awareness, we take responsibility. By doing so we will have the ability to choose. With greater awareness, responsibility and choosing, we activate the motivation-reward circuit. From that place, the quality of life improves. The body-mind benefits from well-being hormones and we become empowered. All of which also gives us freedom.
With days to go until the end of a year, we can choose to celebrate it through learning. Many things happened, some brought us well-being and happiness, therefore, health. Others affected us and even hit us, more or less hard, so we felt sad and even overwhelmed. It is a good time to review the year with a reflective look, with a learning posture. You can always learn! Then we choose whether to reinforce or eliminate and transform ourselves.
Going through that journey of memories while learning also empowers us because we will grow. It is a constant and continuous process. With more awareness, it is possible to dream the new year being the protagonist of one’s own life. It is increasingly certain that there are things that are one’s own and others that are not, things that depend on one and others that do not.
With the greatest clarity each time, applying effort and discipline, your body, your mind and your spirit will move towards what you defined as important to you. And it seems that magic appears. It’s that we make it happen. If at any time or situation you feel like you can’t, ask for help and the sooner the better.
May the new year be one of continuous learning and constant growth to advance your own mind-body well-being and positively impact your desired life and your environment.
Going through it with awareness, responsibility and commitment opens the doors to being you in essence, which from the beginning of the process increases your well-being, peace and happiness. The best way is to try it.
