Ibrahim Al-Embabi, Head of the Tobacco Division at the Federation of Industries, said that the Egyptian market does not need to import cigarettes as a final product, as we have self-sufficiency in production.

The head of the Tobacco Division added, in exclusive statements to “Sada El Balad”, that the Egyptian market is not a producer of tobacco and is imported from abroad as production requirements and raw materials for the production of cigarettes.

Regarding the reasons for the price increase, the head of the tobacco division confirmed that the increase is due to the greed of a merchant and not companies, pointing out that the consumer must verify the price of the product through the barcode on the box, and refrain from buying.

Ibrahim Al-Imbaby, Head of the Tobacco Division at the Federation of Industries, noted that Egypt has achieved self-sufficiency in cigarettes through regarding 53 smoke factories operating in the Egyptian market to meet consumer needs, which recorded 4 billion cigarettes annually.

A significant increase in the price of cigarettes

Cigarette prices have witnessed a rise in the local market during the past two weeks due to merchants hoarding the commodity in conjunction with the government’s imminent approval of raising the value of the tax on cigarette-producing companies by two pounds.

Ibrahim Al-Imbaby, Head of the Tobacco Division at the Federation of Industries, said in previous statements that the scarcity of foreign currency made it difficult to import raw materials and production requirements for cigarettes, pointing out that this crisis is a general problem for all sectors that depend on imports.
