In three decades, the Walloon agricultural sector has lost more than half of its farms. However, the average agricultural area per farm tends to increase, reports L’Avenir on Wednesday.
Wallonia has just made files available containing all the agricultural data for each municipality. Among the most striking figures, that of the number of farms has only decreased over the past 30 years, from 29,000 farms in 1990 to just under 13,000 in 2021. However, the agricultural area used in Wallonia has changed little: from 752,743 hectares in 1990, it has increased to 740,623 hectares in 2021.
“A very small decrease of 1.6%“, notes the newspaper. Farms have therefore continued to grow. Between 1990 and 2021, the average area per farm has more than doubled, from 25.8 hectares to 58.2 hectares.
