Understanding the Decline of the Swimming Pool Market in France: Factors, Trends, and Solutions

After a leap in 2022, the swimming pool market in France is experiencing a significant decline in 2023. According to forecasts by experts in the field, 13% fewer pools have been registered this year. There are various reasons for this decline.

Swimming pool market slowdown in 2023

The period of the Covid pandemic had been marked by a surge in the number of swimming pool constructions in France. This development reflected the aspirations of the moment, namely the need to feel good at home, while confinement was the rule for all. In 2022, no less than 186,000 new swimming pools were built in France, i.e. 25% more than in 2019.

This figure was distributed almost equally between in-ground pools and above-ground pools. In 2023, only 165,000 new pools will be built, i.e. 13% less than in 2022. The decline in enthusiasm for swimming pools can be explained by various factors. The Covid-19 pandemic as well as the war in Ukraine have caused raw material prices to soar, driving up construction costs. At the same time, inflation has undermined the purchasing power of a large number of French people and made them more hesitant to consider heavy expenditure.

Drought and water restrictions

The real estate crisis has also contributed to the drop in the number of new swimming pools built in France. In 2023, housing starts have fallen by 30% in France and sales of single-family homes have collapsed. Fewer houses built means fewer swimming pools. Rising interest rates are another factor weighing heavily on the swimming pool market. The increase in the cost of credit in fact encourages property owners to be reluctant to take out a loan to finance the construction of their swimming pool.

Beyond economic reasons, the poor figures for the swimming pool sector can be explained by the phenomenon of drought observed in most regions of France. The historically low rainfall during this summer led the public authorities to take drastic decisions regarding water restrictions. In some departments, the construction of new swimming pools has simply been prohibited to preserve water.
