The prices for a spa treatment are re-evaluated every year. They are validated by Health Insurance, approved by the Ministry of Labor, Health and Solidarity and published in the Official Journal. How is the cost of an approved spa treatment broken down? What does an 18-day treatment cost in February 2024? Summary of the main information you need to know.

Your spa treatment may benefit from Social Security coverage under three conditions. First of all, it must be prescribed by a doctor or dental surgeon and belong to a chronic pathology belonging to one of the 12 therapeutic orientations covered by Health Insurance. Then, the thermal establishment where you carry out your 18-day treatment must be approved by Health Insurance and approved in the therapeutic orientation corresponding to your pathology.

When booking, the price communicated to you is that of package no. 1. During your medical examination at the start of your treatment, the spa doctor may prescribe physiotherapy treatments for you. You will be like this billed on the basis of package no. 2 or no. 3.

Breakdown of the treatment price

The price of a spa treatment is made up of Billing Limit Price (PLF) and the Liability Flat Rate (TFR). The tariff supplement corresponds to the difference between the PLF and the TFR.

The TFR is the reimbursement basis for Social Security (65% on care and 70% on medical fees or 100% for patients with Long-Term Illness) and mutual insurance. It covers the thermal package (all thermal treatments) and medical fees (visits to the thermal doctor).

The PLFdefined for each therapeutic orientation, corresponds, for its part, to the maximum rate chargeable to spa guests. It is set annually by Health Insurance based on changes in operating costs borne by thermal establishments. It makes it possible to strictly pass on the increase in costs incurred by thermal centers (SMIC, energy, services, evolution of indices, etc.). Health Insurance is the guarantor of this price adjustment process.

Beneficiaries of CSS (ex CMU-C) or Assistance for the acquisition of Supplementary Health Insurance (ACS) are not affected by this PLF, only the TFR will be applied to them.

What you need to know regarding the price supplement

The Tariff Supplement, that is to say the difference between the PLF and the TFR, is financed by the spa guest when the latter is not a beneficiary of CSS (ex CMU-C). However, it may be covered by complementary health insurance (mutual insurance, insurance, etc.).

In 2014, as part of the financing of Social Security, a law was voted on regarding the application of an additional tariff supplement.

Resulting from an agreement between thermal establishments and the Health Insurance Fund, the tariff supplement provides each year, according to a formula based on numerous indicators (increase in charges, energy costs, salaries, etc.), the revaluation of billing rates thermal cures. The additional price is the same in each thermal establishment and it varies depending on the therapeutic orientation prescribed and the number of treatments performed.

In 2023, following the signing of the 2023-2027 national thermal convention, health insurance revised the price supplement upwards.

From now on, these excesses payable by the spa guest amount to approximately 80 euros (for non-CSS beneficiaries), compared to 20 to 30 euros in 2022. These price increases are intended to support thermal establishments in the face of inflation and in particular the increase in energy costs and the minimum wage since 2022 .

Note, however, that the majority of mutual insurance companies write off these excess fees thanks to membership in a spa treatment package.
