Some people think that the appearance of white spots on the nails is evidence of a lack of calcium in the body, but this is not true, as there are many other reasons that lead to the presence of these spots.

Dr. Karan Rajan, a famous surgeon on TikTok, said that white spots are usually half-moon-shaped and appear at the top of the nails, according to the Mirror website.

Rajan added that these white spots on the nails are known as “punctate leukonychia,” and may occur as a result of normal daily actions, such as biting or caring for the nails.

Rajan continued that exposure to an injury can also cause white spots to appear on the nails, because it stops the nail cells from bonding together, and it takes regarding 8 weeks to disappear.

White spots can indicate inflammatory skin conditions, such as nail psoriasis and leukoderma, as well as many other causes, including allergies to certain nail products, certain medications, zinc and calcium supplements, or common nail fungi (superficial white onychomycosis).

There are some health reasons associated with the appearance of white spots on the nails, most notably heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, iron deficiency anemia, high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver, and pneumonia.

Although these reasons are rare, if these white spots persist and do not disappear for a long time, it is recommended to visit a specialist doctor to detect any health problem early.
