TVN announced that starting this month it will begin to apply the analog blackout, a measure that, according to the law, is mandatory for national channels starting next April, and means a migration from analog to digital signals, but what does this mean in practice? ?

Starting in March of this year and progressively, the analog blackout, but what does this mean in practice? Will I need a new television or will I no longer be able to tune in to channels through open television?

Specifically, the measure puts an end to analog signals (SD), those that are captured from the air with the traditional antenna, to begin transmitting only through digitized signals (HD).

What is the analogic shutdown?

10 years ago (2014), Chile enacted the Digital Television Law (TVD), which, among other things, established that national channels must transmit 100% of their programming in digital format and high definition from April of this year.

The aforementioned digital signal It is of higher quality than the analogue, but it has a problem: you can see it or you can’t see it. There are no middle terms. In addition, each channel must transmit at least two completely independent signals, one of which must be in high definition.

It is worth remembering that the Digital blackout in Chile was scheduled to begin in 2020but due to complaints from ANATEL and the channels, its launch was postponed until now.

From when and where does the transition begin?

Although the law requires channels to have the measure implemented since April, TVN announced the following dates for its signals: from March 13, in the regions of Aysén, Magallanes, Arica and Tarapacá. On March 20 it will be the turn of the regions of Atacama, Los Ríos, Coquimbo and Los Lagos. Then; Ñuble, O’Higgins, Maule and Antofagasta on March 27.

And finally, on April 3, the regions of La Araucanía, Bío Bío, Valparaíso and Metropolitana will complete the transition.

What’s wrong with my television? Will it receive a signal or should I change it?

In this regard, many wonder what analogue blackout means in practice. To be specific, the first thing is to differentiate if you use a cable operator to receive the signal or watch the channels on open TV.

In the first case, you don’t need to do anything. If you use open signals, check if the television has the seal “TVD Declared Suitable for Open Digital Television”a sticker that most devices have had since 2010.

If this is the case, to receive the open signal, you must install a UHF antenna, of which there are different models and prices in the local market. If you do not have a TV with the aforementioned seal, a special decoder or set top box is necessary.

What are the benefits of analogue blackout?

The migration from analogue to digital television entails a series of benefits for users, including decentralizing content, as it will allow regional media to reach more people, which in turn can translate into better advertising revenues.

Technically, the new signal brings greater clarity or definition of the image and also better audio quality, because it is not affected by interference.
