Understanding the Activities and Experiences of the Synod: A Comprehensive Article

The President of the Synod Communication Commission said in a press conference held on the followingnoon of Tuesday, October 17th and the morning of Wednesday, October 18th, that an article will be prepared for those who do not know regarding the activities of the Synod, and who cannot participate in the Synod, to understand the activities of the Synod and the experiences of the participants.

Following the various meetings of the sixteenth General Assembly of the Synod on Synodality, which began on October 4, the President of the Synod Communication Commission, Paulo Ruffini, said that a message containing information regarding the Synod, including the activities of the Synod and the experiences of its participants, will be released for the people of God who do not know regarding the Synod. He gave this information in a press conference held on October 18th. He stated that 335 of the 346 members of the Synod were in favor of proposing such an article with the permission of the Pope.

Cardinal Leonardo Ulrich Steiner from Brazil, Archbishop Sbignev Stankevich from Latvia, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David from the Philippines, and Wyatt Olivas, a 19-year-old from the United States, the youngest of Sindh, attended the press conference.

Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerih explained that the article to be released on synod information will also help the synod’s further work on synodality. He also clarified that it will not be a guideline for the next Synod meeting, which will share the issues discussed in the Synod and various experiences in the Synod.

Prayer for Immigrants and Refugees

Mrs. Sheila Peers, Secretary of the Communications Commission, announced that there will be a prayer meeting for refugees and migrants on Thursday, October 19, at 7:15 p.m. in St. Peter’s Square. Members of the Synod will also participate in this prayer led by the Holy Father.

Amazonia Region and Synod

Cardinal Steiner from the Amazonia region stated that the indigenous peoples and their representatives were able to participate in the meetings for the preparation of the synod, and that everyone is getting the opportunity to speak in the synod meetings that are now being held. He added that there are regarding 73,000 indigenous people, and listening to them and to each other is helpful.

Latvia and the Synod

Around 20 percent of Latvia’s Catholics initially approached the synod with skepticism, but later embraced efforts to listen to others, Archbishop Stankevich said. He made clear in this preparation the importance of listening not only to Catholics, but also to others, in order to know what the Holy Spirit has to say to the Church. He reminded that it is important for women not to compete with men but to complement each other. He also highlighted the importance of giving more space to women in the Church, without departing from what is said in the Gospels and tradition.

The Celestials and the Synod

Cardinal Steiner, who answered the questions regarding heavenly beings and other genders, clarified that although there were thoughts regarding this in the Synod, the Synod did not reach any specific conclusions. Archbishop Stankevich said gay people should also be welcomed with love, not judgement. The human dignity of such people should also be respected. Reminding that extramarital sex is a sin, he also reminded the celestials to maintain chastity.

Bishop David said that there is a tendency to label people according to their gender, political and religious views, but Jesus saw people as children of God.
