Understanding the 2023 French Property Tax Levy: Changes, Increases, and Surprise Payments

2023-11-18 11:11:16

A tax levy, additional to the property tax, surprised more than 7 million French taxpayers on November 15 and 16, 2023. While some wonder regarding this unexpected maneuver by the tax authorities, it turns out that it has a direct relationship with significant changes in the method of collection and exceptional increases in property taxes this year.

In fact, the taxpayers affected by this surprise levy are all in the same situation: they have opted for monthly payment of property tax. Normally, this monthly withdrawal is spread over 10 installments, from January to October, excluding the months of November and December.

An exceptional increase in property taxes!

This year, the property tax has seen a dizzying increase, reaching at least 7.1%. An exceptional increase which has not been recorded for 37 years. The General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFIP) reacted by deducting, on November 15 and 16, an amount which represents the difference between the 2022 land notice and that of this year from taxpayers’ accounts.

In detail, Moneyvox explained that if the property tax increased by 8% and was 1,000 euros in 2022, the tax authorities took an additional 80 euros. This amount corresponds to the difference between the old amount and that which is due for the year 2023, set at 1,080 euros in this example.

In other words, the tax administration avoided an abrupt levy in October due to this surplus. Thus, this additional amount is subject to an eleventh monthly debit, carried out on Wednesday November 15.

For taxpayers residing in municipalities that have increased their property tax by 10% or more, another surprise awaits them in December. A new levy will take place to take into account this exceptional increase. For example, with an increase of 15%, the annual amount to be paid now amounts to 1,150 euros in 2023. Consequently, the tax authorities carried out an additional levy of 100 euros on Wednesday November 15, which will be followed by a last one amounting to 50 euros in mid-December

You should know that although this levy is surprising for more than one person, the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFIP) had warned the taxpayers concerned, including detailed information on the evolution of the payment schedule. on the 2023 property tax notice.

However, it should be noted that if you believe that you have been the victim of an error in calculating your tax, you must contact the tax service via secure messaging in the private area, on the tax website. .gouv.fr, or by going directly to the tax center.
