The German Association of Otolaryngologists said that the symptoms of sinusitis are a stuffy nose and thick mucus flowing from it or from the back of the throat, in addition to facial pain.
The association added that sinusitis is divided into two types: acute and chronic, explaining that acute sinusitis often occurs due to a viral infection (such as a cold).
Acute sinusitis can often be treated with nasal drops or nasal sprays with a decongestant effect.
It is also useful to rinse the nose with a saline solution, as it moisturizes the nasal mucosa and helps to drain mucus from the sinuses better.
Chronic inflammation
If symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks, the sinusitis is chronic. Chronic sinusitis is usually caused by chronic poor nasal ventilation, for example due to swelling and inflammation as a result of allergies (such as hay fever or house dust allergy), anatomical features (such as a deviated nasal septum), or nasal polyps.
Dental problems, and in rare cases, serious illnesses, can also lead to chronic sinusitis.
Here, treatment primarily targets the cause of sinusitis, where allergies are treated with antihistamines. If there are anatomical changes (in the shape of the sinuses on the inside), surgery may be necessary to control symptoms.
