Grouping of pigment cells in the skin, the mole is usually brown in color. However, it can happen that it is red. How to explain this pigmentation? And when should you worry?
Moles are not uncommon on the skin. But some tend to worry us more than others, like the red colored ones. However, this pigmentation is not problematic. In the vast majority of cases, red moles are benign and can appear anywhere on the body.
Called a “nevus” by professionals, a mole is a collection of pigment cells and its color can vary depending on the quality and quantity of melanin, the pigment that colors the skin. It can thus be brown, black, but also with pink, bluish or even red tints.
Note that it can also be a cherry or ruby angioma, a small benign tumor similar to a red button and caused by abnormal dilation of blood vessels.
monitor its progress
In reality, it is not so much the color of the mole that should alert you, but the evolution of its appearance: if it changes color, diameter, shape, or appearance. If this is the case, it is strongly recommended to consult a dermatologist.
A skin self-examination can also help you assess the early signs of melanoma (skin cancer): this is “the ABCDE method”. A mole may be considered suspicious if it meets any of the following criteria:
A for Asymmetry: the asymmetrical mole, of non-circular shape
B for Edges: it has irregular edges, the aspect is poorly delimited
C for Color: it has an uneven color or changes color
D for Diameter: it has a diameter greater than 6 millimeters and the size increases
E for Evolution: it quickly changes appearance and has a rapid evolution
If most moles are intensive, they should be monitored regularly, and checked by a specialist, at least once a year.
