In September 2023, no increase in prices in Mayotte, under the contrary effect of the increase in energy and food prices, and the drop in prices of services and manufactured products.
Last month, energy prices started to rise once more (+3.5%), following stagnating in August. The prices of petroleum products increased sharply (+5.9%), following an increase of 13 cents in the price of diesel (following +2 cents in August), an increase of 8 cents in the price of gasoline and an increase in the gas price (+1 euro) which returns to its July price. The electricity price is stable.
Food prices increased by 0.6% in September, following a slight decrease in August (-0.2%). For once, the prices of fresh products fell by 1.1%, while those of other food products increased by 0.9%.
Evolution of the consumer price index
Prices of manufactured products continue to fall (-0.3% in September following -0.4% in August) due to the drop in prices of clothing and shoes (-1.6%). Prices of other manufactured products remain stable.
Prices of services decreased by 1% in September, following the increases observed from June to August. This drop is exclusively driven by the significant drop in prices of transport services, -7.9%, linked to the off-peak travel season. Prices for other services are stable.
Gasoline more expensive than in mainland France despite price controls
Over a year, in Mayotte, prices increased by 4.2%, a little less than at the national level, +4.9%. Inflation over the last twelve months is lower than at the national level in Mayotte for manufactured products, food, services and tobacco, but on the contrary, energy prices are increasing more, + 17.9 % over one year, compared to +11.9% at the national level.
Food weighs more heavily than in mainland France on household budgets in Mayotte
Energy accounts for 9% of the household budget in Mayotte. The rise in energy prices is linked to increases in fuel and electricity prices. The summary table of price developments highlights a sharp increase in petroleum products in Mayotte over the last 12 months, compared to 10.7% in France (excluding Mayotte). This raises questions regarding the effectiveness of price regulation by the prefecture in Mayotte, as is the case in the other overseas departments.
The price of a gas bottle fell by 9.6% over one year.
In terms of food, its expenses weigh more heavily on household budgets here than in mainland France: 23% compared to 18% in mainland France for households with the lowest standard of living. Food prices increase by 7.8%, less than at the national level, +9.7%, but the prices of fresh products increase by 7.2%, more than in France, +4, 5%. The prices of other food products increase by 8% in Mayotte over one year.
Prices of services increased by 1.9% over one year in Mayotte compared to +2.9% nationally. Services represent 40% of household consumption. Over one year, the increase in prices in services is partly linked to increases in the prices of rent and related services (+2.8%), communication services (+1.4%) and other services (+3 .7%). On the other hand, prices fell for transport services (-6.6%) and health services (-0.7%).
The prices of manufactured products over one year are stable in Mayotte, while they are increasing at the national level (+2.8%). They account for 27% of household consumption. The drop in prices of clothing and shoes in Mayotte (-5.7% compared to +2.5% at the national level) moderates the increase in other manufactured products (+2% compared to +3.8%).
The prices of health products are falling in Mayotte (-0.4%) and nationally (-0.9%). Tobacco prices increased by 6.3% over one year in Mayotte (+9.9% in France).
