The arrival of a newborn to a woman is usually a happy event that makes her come to life and gives her a strong stimulus. However, in some cases depression attacks women during pregnancy or following childbirth. To the point of harming herself and her son.

This situation has its reasons that make the woman a prey to depression. Two specialists in gynecology and psychological counseling presented it to “Sky News Arabia”, explaining at the same time how the woman can be protected from it, and if she falls into it, how does the treatment take place.

Depression or depression?

Basma Jabr, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist, distinguishes between postpartum depression and “baby blues”.

  • “Children’s depression” may appear in 80 percent of women, and it occurs early following delivery, but its symptoms are less severe and disappear quickly within two weeks.
  • As for postpartum depression, 15 percent of women experience it, and its symptoms may be delayed in appearing for a period of up to months, and they are more severe and persistent.
  • Postpartum depression affects a woman’s adjustment to life to the point of neglecting herself and her newborn.

Symptoms of postpartum depression

According to Basma Jabr, symptoms of depression may differ from one woman to another, the most common of which are:

  • Sleep disorders, between increasing and decreasing the number of hours.
  • Eating disorders ranging from binge eating to food cravings.
  • These symptoms are associated with anxiety, anger, insomnia, and mood swings, with a sense of separation from the newborn, life partner, and family.

From a happy accident to a gloomy one

The moment of happiness with a newborn turns into moments of tension, distress and hatred of life for some women. What makes them depressed?

Basma Jabra, as well as the mental health consultant Nadia Jamal, respond that an internal physical imbalance and social and psychological issues are behind this condition, including:

  • Hormonal changes, thyroid disorders, and vitamin D deficiency.
  • Divorce and life in social isolation.
  • Women are distressed by the physical, physiological, and daily routine changes that occur to them during pregnancy.
  • Anxiety regarding the great responsibility and the inability to bear the burdens of the child.
  • She feels left out to her family and friends.

In a study conducted on 973 women who had “postpartum depression”, it was found that 26.5 percent of them had this before pregnancy, and 33.4 percent during pregnancy.

Serious repercussions

Obstetrics and gynecology consultant Basma Jabr warns once morest complacency in dealing with this condition. Because sometimes it leads to the woman committing crimes once morest herself or her child without awareness, and from that, the possibility of harming her child, or committing suicide.

Nadia Gamal offers tips to avoid postpartum depression:

  • The husband stands beside his wife and shares with her all the details during the pregnancy, and notifies her of her concern.
  • Examples of this interest include following her food, praising her looks, and appreciating her pain.
  • That the family and friends surround the lady, and help her in the house if the pain of pregnancy makes her unable to take care of him.

As for if depression really attacked the woman, Basma Jabr says that it can be mitigated and overcome peacefully, if:

  • The husband and the family were keen on constant and affectionate communication with the woman, helping her take care of her child, and encouraging her to relax whenever she felt stressed and upset.
  • Never leave her alone.
  • Encourage her to exercise and take a warm shower.
  • Resorting to treatment to mitigate the effects.
