Having a lot of hair does not necessarily mean there is a health problem. This is because hair growth is influenced by various factors such as hormones, genetics, and nutrition. However, if you are accompanied by symptoms of menstrual irregularity, you need to suspect ‘polycystic ovary syndrome’ at least once.

◇Male hormone concentration increases and hair increases.
Polycystic ovary syndrome refers to a condition in which the ovaries are filled with immature eggs that cannot ovulate. It occurs when hormonal imbalance occurs in the ovaries, which are involved in egg production and female hormone secretion. At this time, male hormones increase, causing ovulation disorders. Polycystic ovary syndrome causes various symptoms such as hirsutism, obesity, acne, male pattern baldness, and menstrual irregularities. If you have hirsutism, a lot of hair grows especially on the philtrum, stomach, and chin. As the concentration of male hormones in the body increases, hair becomes thicker and darker, and the amount of hair increases.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is caused not only by genetic factors but also by environmental factors such as stress, excessive diet, and irregular lifestyle habits. It is a disease commonly found in women of childbearing age. According to data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of polycystic ovarian syndrome patients in Korea is increasing every year from 40,148 in 2017 to 62,653 in 2021.

◇ Risk of endometrial cancer if left untreated
Polycystic ovarian syndrome should not be ignored. This is because it can lead to endometrial cancer. This is because patients with polycystic ovary syndrome have difficulty ovulating and the uterine lining becomes abnormally thick. This causes the endometrium to proliferate and increases the risk of endometrial cancer.

In hospitals, polycystic ovary syndrome is diagnosed when the menstrual cycle is longer than 35 to 45 days or when polycystic ovaries or excessive secretion of androgen hormones are observed on ultrasound. Testing methods include ultrasound and hormone testing. Regular menstruation is usually induced through hormone treatment. Ovulation inducers, etc. are used. Ovulation inducing drugs vary from person to person, but start taking them on the 3rd to 5th day of menstruation and take 1 to 3 tablets a day for 5 days. However, ovulation inducers should be taken under the guidance of a specialist because they can stimulate the ovaries.
