Understanding Pirola: The New Covid-19 Subvariant and Winter Respiratory Infections

2024-01-24 21:12:03

Respiratory infections due to the winter season have become present in the population and with it a new variant of Covid-19.

What do you need to know regarding Pirola, the new subvariant of Covid-19?

Teresa Ramírez, an infectologist at TecSalud at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, explained the details that are known so far regarding the new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“The scientific evidence, so far, suggests that it has a greater transmission capacity, but it does not seem to be related to an increase in serious cases,” he indicated.

The infectologist also mentioned that, currently, JN.1 Pirola is classified as a variant of interest, but with low risk to global public health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

What are the symptoms of the Pirola subvariant?

Until now, there are no categorical symptoms detailed by the WHO, so the following are most frequently reported:

  • Fever
  • Chill
  • Sore throat

Ramírez clarified that the presence of these symptoms does not guarantee that it is Covid-19, so, if there is suspicion, he recommended taking a screening test.

This element is the key for SARS-CoV-2 to enter human cells and take control of replicating, which is why it is associated with a higher risk of reinfection, compared to other variants.

How does this subvariant arise?

The JN.1 Pirola mutation was first detected in Luxembourg and the United States at the end of August 2023.

Since then, it increased its presence in Europe and by mid-December it was identified in China.

The health professional explained that SARS-CoV-2, like all viruses, changes over time, with mutations that give the virus some type of advantage to survive.
